HOW NEW ENGLAND IS GETTING IN THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT

There’s a chill in the air, but people throughout the New England region are doing their best to make the season warm and bright. We’ve seen some wonderful stories of holiday generosity that are sure to melt your heart. A few of our favorites:

Homeless Man’s Kindness More Than Repaid

Kate McClure was driving late at night on I-95 when her car ran out of gas on the road. She was ready to walk to a gas station when Johnny, a local homeless man, came up to help. He spent his last $20 to buy her gas. Kate did not have any cash on her, and was unable to repay him that night. Kate was grateful for his generosity and shared her story in a GoFundMe to help him out the way he’d helped her. By the close of the campaign, they had raised over $400,000. This is enough to get Johnny a modest home, a car and a trust that will provide funds to live on.

Massachusetts Police Bring Toys to Local Kids

When times are tight, it can be hard for young families to put something meaningful under the tree. This is why police departments throughout Western Massachusetts have conducted local “stuff the cruiser” events. Starting in November, they showed up at locations throughout the state to collect donated toys. This also provided a great opportunity for local citizens to meet the people who patrol their streets.

Secret Santa Pays off Layaways

Some parents who are stretching their funds turn to layaway services at retailers throughout the region. Toys-R-Us is one location where individuals can pick out big gifts like bikes or gaming consoles and pay them off a little at a time between the purchase date and Christmas. A number of lucky locals found out, however, that their layaway had been covered by one local man. A gentleman who goes only by Charlie K showed up at a New Jersey Toys-R-Us location to pay off the balance on 62 orders. His purchases for local individuals came to just over $10,000.

These stories and others like them show how easy it is to chip in and make a positive difference during the holidays and all year long. We hope these examples inspire you to spread some season cheer! Have a wonderful holiday and a prosperous new year!
